FAQs
Q: What is the Stateline Literacy Council?
A: The Stateline Literacy Council is a volunteer, non-profit
organization. Our mission is to help English and non-English speaking adults learn basic skills--especially reading, writing, and speaking English.
Q: Where is the Stateline Literacy Council located?
A: At 822 Broad Street, in downtown Beloit, across the street from the Salvation Army.
Q: What does the Stateline Literacy Council offer?
A: All of our services are free of charge. We offer three types of English classes: Basic/ Survival English, Intermediate English, and Advanced/ Conversational English. We offer one-on-one tutoring. We also offer Citizenship classes in the fall. We have several computers with Internet access and e-mail for registered students. We have several computer programs (Rosetta Stone and Ellis software) that improve the English language learning process. We collaborate with other area agencies to further the education of our students.
Q: When are the English Classes offered?
A: Monday through Thursday from 10:00 am until noon and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Q: How does someone register for classes?
A: Our classes are open enrollment. Someone can stop in our office anytime during office hours and fill out paperwork for registration. Once the paperwork is complete, the student may attend class--even the same day!
Q: When is the Stateline Literacy Council open?
A: The Stateline Literacy Council is open Monday and Wednesday, 8:00 am until 3:00 pm. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we are open from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm.
Q: Do you we have on-site child care services?
A: YES! We have a child care room. Child care is FREE of charge during class hours.
Q: Tell me more about one-on-one tutoring.
A: Students and tutors commit to at least two hours per week (more when
schedules permit). They mutually work at their own pace and on their own schedules. They can meet at the Literacy Council or at a mutually convenient location. We ALWAYS have a waiting list for students looking for extra help from a tutor.
Q: How can someone become a tutor for the Stateline Literacy Council?
A: Attend Tutor Training workshops! We ALWAYS need tutors. All you need is a little bit of time and patience! You DO NOT need to be bilingual or speak another language in order to tutor someone. In order to become a certified tutor you must attend a scheduled session of training workshops.
Q: What do you mean by Certified Tutor?
A: The Stateline Literacy Council is affiliated with Pro-Literacy America and Pro-Literacy Worldwide. When someone fulfills all of the requirements through our tutor training workshops and becomes a certified tutor, a Training Certificate is given that allows the trained tutor to tutor someone at ANY literacy council across America!
Q: Is there a cost for the Tutor Training Workshops?
A: The cost is a one-time fee of $20.00. Once you become a trained tutor, you may exchange materials for any level your tutee is working at. You may also use any other material we have in our lending library at the SLC office.
Q: What are some outcomes that are seen at SLC?
A: Students benefit by realizing their potential for a better life! Tutors benefit by seeing their students succeed. Businesses benefit with a more productive, skilled workforce. And the community as a whole benefits from all of these.
Q: Is there anything else someone can do to volunteer at SLC?
A: Help is needed in several areas. As a COMMUNICATOR: pass the word to people and businesses about our services! As a RESOURCE PERSON: talents and experience in fundraising, membership development, clerical areas, corporate programs, or any other creative venue can help us achieve our mission. As a CONTRIBUTOR: much of our support comes from local donations. Donations range from materials -- such as computers, office supplies, desks, cleaning supplies, paper towels, and toilet paper -- to financial donations. All donations are TAX DEDUCTIBLE!
Q: How is the Stateline Literacy Council funded?
A: We are a non-profit, United Way-funded organization. We also receive other grants and donations from area foundations, businesses, and community members. We are lucky to have such a supportive community!
