The Stateline Literacy Council Beloit - Inc. is a volunteer, non-profit United Way funded organization. SLC was established in 1972 by the Federated Women's Club of Beloit. We have been in continuous operation for over 30 years.
Stateline Literacy Council is dedicated to providing literacy services to English and non-English speaking adults with limited basic skills and limited proficiency in English. Free instruction is offered in reading, writing, speaking English and math through class instruction and one-on-one tutoring. Our vision is to empower individuals through literacy, ultimately improving the quality of their lives and the lives of their families.
The number one reason students come to the Stateline Literacy Council is to improve their basic skills so that they can find a job or improve their current job situation. The second most common reason students come to SLC is to learn how to better communicate with schools and health personnel.
Currently, 87% of our clients are Latino and 10% are basic adult learners. There are always students on a waiting list for a tutor, with an average of 4 new students registering per week. You do not have to speak Spanish to teach a Spanish speaking person English. The ability to read and patience are the only real qualifications needed as a tutor!
